ADULT LITERACY CENTER

Text box item sample content

In 2015, VINE received a federal Older Americans Act grant to target services to culturally and racially diverse elders in the Greater Mankato community. Since most of the elders are unable to speak, read or write the English language, we established the Adult Literacy Center. Trained volunteers are matched one-to-one with an elder to help them learn basic skills, from the opportunity to practice conversational English to enjoy outings in the community. These experiences help to alleviate some of the isolation, stress and loneliness that elders experience.

Anyone 55+ looking to learn English at their own pace and needs, are welcome to join the program for FREE. Transportation can also be provided FREE of charge if needed.

Classes are held Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 – 11:00 am in the VINE Adult Community Center.

Since starting this program, VINE has assisted nearly 100 people from 16 different countries.

If you are interested in learning more, participating or volunteering, please contact our Adult Literacy Center Coordinator, Helen Jaeb at 507-720-8828 or VINE’s Diversity Coordinator, Julie Hawker at 507-386-5582

Testimonials

  • My mom lives with my family. Before my mom started going to class she would sleep late into the morning. I would worry about her at home by herself all day while we were at work or the children were at school. Since she started going to class she is getting ready for school when children are getting ready for school and she is happy. She tells us about her day and she hangs her papers on the refrigerator next to her grandchildren’s school papers. She also has friends from many countries that she didn’t have before.

  • I enjoy going to class because I learn many things about America from my friendly teachers and they teach me to speak English better.

  • Each time I volunteer, I am so inspired by the student’s willingness and persistence to learn English.
