In 2015, VINE received a federal Older Americans Act grant to target services to culturally and racially diverse elders in the Greater Mankato community. Since most of the elders are unable to speak, read or write the English language, we established the Adult Literacy Center. Trained volunteers are matched one-to-one with an elder to help them learn basic skills, from the opportunity to practice conversational English to enjoy outings in the community. These experiences help to alleviate some of the isolation, stress and loneliness that elders experience.
Anyone 55+ looking to learn English at their own pace and needs, are welcome to join the program for FREE. Transportation can also be provided FREE of charge if needed.
Classes are held Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 – 11:00 am in the VINE Adult Community Center.
Since starting this program, VINE has assisted nearly 100 people from 16 different countries.
If you are interested in learning more, participating or volunteering, please contact our Adult Literacy Center Coordinator, Helen Jaeb at 507-720-8828 or VINE’s Diversity Coordinator, Julie Hawker at 507-386-5582.
